How We Got Our Name

Our name emerged from two Ohio professional football teams: the Massillon Tigers and the Canton Bulldogs. The Massillon Tigers and Canton Bulldogs were among the first professional American football teams playing in the Ohio League from 1903 to 1919. The rivalry between the two cities galvanized fans, and as avid football enthusiasts, the name reflects our love of the competitive American sport

The Massillon Tigers

  • Professional football team from Massillon, Ohio
  • Played in the Ohio League
  • Rivaled the Canton Bulldogs and won five consecutive Ohio League championships from 1903 – 1907
  • Opted not to join the NFL in 1920; remained an independent club until 1923
  • Team name was passed onto Massillon Washington Highs School, which still uses it today

The Canton Bulldogs

  • Professional football team from Canton, Ohio
  • Played in the Ohio League from 1903 – 1919, and with its successor, the National Football League, from 1920 – 1926
  • Won Ohio League championships between 1917 – 1919 and were NFL champions in 1922 and 1923
  • Jim Thorpe, considered the best athlete of the era, was their most celebrated player
